Welcome to Millwood Public Schools

The mission of the Millwood Public Schools District is to prepare all students, academically and socially for lifelong learning and achievement.

We are “Committed to Excellence”, and we work hard to make the site a primary source for timely information for all users, and a main gateway for improved communication between parents, teachers, students and other members of our community.

Message from the Superintendent

Dear Millwood Parent or Guardian:

Adequate yearly progress (AYP) is one of the cornerstones of the federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.  It is a measure of year-to-year student achievement on statewide assessments.  Any local educational agency (LEA) that fails for two consecutive years, to make adequate yearly progress as defined by the State’s accountability system §200.50d is identified for improvement.  Millwood Public Schools has been identified for Year One of District Improvement.

The many successes within the district cannot be measured by tests alone and we appreciate your past and continued support.  We take pride in the educational opportunities we are able to provide to our students.  Our teachers and staff members work very hard to meet the needs of all students.  We know that students are learning and making progress, and we consider this to be an important indicator of success.

  • However, we are concerned about the academic progress of all of our students.  We have identified the following instructional strategies in which to focus, with district and state assistance.
  • Formative assessment project including professional development for teachers on  effectively using formative assessment to facilitate learning
  •  Prescriptive computer assisted programs for all students
  • On-going meetings to discuss pacing and curriculum implementation
  •  Extended day learning opportunities for PreK-8 reading/language arts and mathematics students
  • Consultants to visit the schools, provide training and technical assistance on curriculum development

As parents/guardians, there are some things you can do to strengthen the academic achievement of your children.  The following list of things we believe will support our schools as we strive to improve the educational performance of all our students:

  • Hold high expectations for your children
  • Read to and with your children in the elementary grades
  • Support the schools in their efforts to maintain proper discipline
  • Make sure that your children attend school regularly, arrive on time and have appropriate supplies
  • Use Parent Portal, email and conferences to communicate regularly with teachers of your children
  • Attend Parent University or other workshops provided to assist you in working with your children to increase achievement.

We are committed to continually improve instruction for our students.  We hope that as parents/guardians, you will become involved in our district improvement initiatives as we continue to monitor student achievement and set high expectations.  We encourage you to get to know your children’s teachers, the class routines and the teachers’ expectations.  If you have any questions regarding the contents of this letter, please give me a call at 478-1336 extension 4401.

Sincerely,

Gloria Griffin, Ed.D.
Superintendent
